A while back, you reported the two bug reports included at the end of
this message.

In both of these cases, the behavior of mkserv is correct. Each time
mkserv is run, it must execute the mkserv scripts for all services
currently installed on the workstation. This is intentional, and it's
how mkserv is designed.

If you want a more detailed explanation, ask Richard for it :-)

Subject: vax 7.1H: mkserv

From: Sharon Belville <belville@ATHENA.MIT.EDU>

System name: athanatos
Type and version:	CVAXSTAR 7.1H (9 update(s) to same version)
Display type: SM

What were you trying to do?
	Run mkserv remote

What's wrong:
I already had run mkserv for discuss, mail, and nfs.
/site/server/.services confirmed this. Here's what happened:

# mkserv remote

Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/discuss.add

Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/mail.add

Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/nfs.add

Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/remote.add
Editing /etc/inetd.conf...done.

Updating /site/server...
SyncTree version 3.1.14
Updating root symlinks...
SyncTree version 3.1.14
Updating rc.conf

===> Remember to get a discuss srvtab and put it in /usr/spool/discuss.
===> Remember to set up an acl in /usr/spool/discuss.
===> Remember to check sendmail.cf to make sure it does what you expect.
===> Remember to set up /etc/exports.
===> Remember to set up a credentials file in /site/usr/etc.
===> Remember to get a srvtab with rvdsrv.<machine>.
===> Remember to arrange the appropriate Moira entries.
===> Please make sure NFSSRV is set to an approporate number in /etc/rc.conf

Update finished.

The service change requests will take effect upon the next reboot
of the machine.

/site/server has been used for the server specific files
Do not modify these files as they can be replaced at any time.

The contents of /site/bin/athena and /site/etc/athena are no
longer being used and may be removed. In addition, items placed
in /site/usr by pre-6.4 versions of mkserv may also be removed.

What should have happened:
mkserv shouldn't have run on discuss, mail, and nfs.

What were you trying to do?
	mkserv -remote

What's wrong:
	Here's what the script returned:

  Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/discuss.add

  Running /srvd/usr/athena/lib/update/nfs.add

What should have happened:
It seems to be accessing all the other mkserv "sub-scripts". I don't
know if it's doing anything other than echoing, but this is not right.

cat /site/server/.services still returns discuss, mail, and nfs, and
not remote, so mkserv -remote seems to have the right effect.

In general, the mkserv script seems to be very sloppy. I think I've
filed a bug report before when I've gotten other extraneous material
	echoing.
