A few of the machines were unavailable and the mail was not sent to
those machines (as implied by the error messages). Most of these
addresses were valid ones, as I've sent successfully to them
before.
You're reading the error messages wrong. In fact, the message *was*
queued, and the bounce you got was just a notice letting you know that
delivery to certain sites was deferred. Look at the errors again:
----- Transcript of session follows -----
421 portia.stanford.edu.tcp... Deferred: Connection timed out during user open with portia.stanford.edu
421 src.dec.com.tcp... Deferred: Host is unreachable
250 hpda.cup.hp.com.tcp... 250 Deferred
421 think.com.tcp... Deferred: Host is unreachable
All of the "Deferred" messages mean that delivery was deferred, but
continued attempts will be made to deliver the message. You'll
probably get reminders once a day for three days, and after three
days, any deliveries that have not yet succeeded will be bounced back
to you with "Could not send message after 3 days" errors, or something
like that.
