X server getting reset on 7.2L DECMIPS

In my .xsession file I have:
/usr/bin/X11/xrdb -merge .Xresources
/usr/athena/config_console
This works fine on the VAX and RT, but on the DECMIPS the X server
appears to be getting reset when I do the config_console and thus all
my resources get trashed. Apparently the X server is reseting when
the console closes its connection, if I start another client before
doing the config_console the X server doesn't reset.
