Perhaps we could get this new version of Kermit audited and
installed on the dialup servers? -Ron

Hi!

The version of kermit that is installed on Athena is an oldish
version. There is now a much faster version (available from
watsun.cc.columbia.edu) that supports sliding windows and lots of
other nice features, enabling transfer rates close to the modem data
rate (215 cps for a 2400 bps modem). I have compiled it and installed
the binary in my directory. However, I now have a problem which you
migh be able to help me with: Since the owner of the file is myself,
kermit is unable to change the tty port mode to 8 bits.

It seems that the default when accessing one of the dialup machines by
telnet or rlogin (I believe telnet is the default) is 7 bits with some
kind of parity checking of the 8th. Can I change that???

I have no problem transfering ASCII files, but compressed files fail
miserably when I choose 8 bit no parity for the transmission mode in
Kermit. If I choose instead 7 bit, mark parity, then this forces
kermit to transform any character with the 8th bit set into 2
characters which effectively halves the data rate on compressed files
(since Ziv-Lempel usually compresses by a factor of 2 so it is a no win
situation!!!).

UNRELATED QUESTION: Are there any plans for Athena to support SLIP or
PPP as serial line protocols? It would be really nice to be able to
use telnet and ftp from my computer at home!!!

Regards,

	Julien.
