Hello, what follows is a peculiar problem that perhaps someone can resolve.
(I have omitted all of the mail headers for ease of reading.)

PROBLEM: vaxstation 3100 rx23 NOT out of alignment
Hello,
The diskette drive in "my" VAXstation 3100 (E40-358-11, in the
first cube of the E40-358 annex) appears to be out of alignment -- it
cannot trade media with the IBM PS/2, the PS/2 can read commercially
duplicated diskettes, and the VAXstation cannot read commercially
duplicated diskettes.
I would like this fixed, but not before I can copy the diskettes
I have onto other media, which should be done by tomorrow.
Thanks,
Brian Hetrick

RESPONSE #1: from hotline
Hello,
Hotline got this mail message. (see below)
A call was placed to Digital Field Service who examined the diskette
drive and could find no problems. (This machine does have the boot ROMS
installed in it. And it is a PVAX model 30)
Can anyone figure this out?
Please send replies to hotline.
Thank You,
rita

RESPONSE #2: from Brian Hetrick
Hello,
Well, perhaps it isn't out of alignment, but E40-358-11 can't
read disks that other VAXstation 3100s I've checked, and the PS/2, are
perfectly happy reading, and disks E40-358-11 formats (via the
ROM-based formatter) can't be read on other machines.
So, if the RX23 in E40-358-11 is properly aligned, I would like
to report a few other machines with out-of-alignment floppies... :-)
Thanks,
Brian Hetrick

RESPONSE #3: from hotline:
I have done the following:
1. formatted a diskette on his vaxstation 3100 in e40-358-11
2. read and wrote on that diskette on my vaxstation (totally separate)
3. using that same diskette, re-installed software on his vaxstation
with out any incident
THIS IS THE CRITICAL PART: What else could be wrong??!!!
Please send replies, ideas, anything to hotline and cc:hetrick.
THANK YOU. -rita (hardware hotline)
ps- I have spoken to DEC and no RX23 has ever needed to be replaced.
