A user in the 4-035 cluster was using emacs and an xterm. She typed
help, and after a long pause, her console said I/O error, the screen
flashed blank, and then the workstation crashed and began to reboot.
This is all the info I have (my guess is not enough memory, but I don't
   pretend to understand this stuff).

It sounds more to me like a bad hard disk. "Not enough memory" does
not cause a workstation to reboot. Which workstation was it?
