This letter concerns a hardware, not a software, bug but I understand the
same people need to be told.
The three laser printers in the Student Center Athena cluster generate
quite a bit of paper, much of it cover sheet, which the users never even
remove from the print output tray. I propose that this half-used (one side)
paper be used as the paper supply for a printer that should be renamed
"draft" or "recycle" which people can use for non-critical document printing.
This could cut paper use in the cluster by easily one third and possibly
more.
I have seen a system like this in use in a comparable environment at Reed
College. I believe an Apple LaserWriter Plus was used as the "draft" printer.
One SIPB member suggested that ink laden paper might prematurely age the
laser printers here. If that is the case perhaps an older flawed but
functional printer should be used for this.
It is a deplorable waste to use only one side of this large quantity of
two-sided paper. I would be happy to publicize or write a message to explain
this system to the Athena public or do whatever I can to get this going.
Thank You
