Yesterday and again today, when thesis ran out of paper, the printer
showed as being down with an out of paper condition until the complete job
which was then printing completed.

This note is confusing so I will try and rephrase it a little better. The
printer runs out of paper in the middle of a large print job and the
"out of paper condition" stays and the printer states that an out-of-paper
condition exists until the print job has completed printing. Then and only
then does the printer get back to giving a correct status. This has resulted
in phone calls from users asking why we have not put paper in the printer.
