There was an error in my init files and I encountered 2 bugs, while
trying to report it, I encountered 2 additional "problems". This is
mostly because I'm abnormal, but you probably should look into them
since they probably aren't too hard...
The login bugs were:
1) When your standard login fails, the message says something like
"select non-standard login", but that's not the option given in
the XDM display (I figured it out, but some less knowledgable
type might be confused). This is simply fixing the text of
the error to correspond to the actual text in the XDM window.
2) I don't have a ~/Mail directory (after all I don't receive my mail here).
When I log in with the system standard login from the menu, it stops
to ask me a question in the non-interactive window...whether
to create it or not.
The additional things I noted were:
I initially tried to report this with sendbug, but it, too, fails
without a ~/Mail directory. In a rather fatal way. It did offer to
create the directory for me, but I have no need of it and no need to
take up the disk space.
Another thing I noticed is that this workstation has 3 (yes three)
compute bound emacs jobs for user IDs not in the passwd file. I've
heard other Athena users mention this effect, too. I assume this
means you still have the emacs bug that causes it to go compute bound
when the X display server crashes. I believe this was fixed from
18.54 to 18.55, but I'm not certain.
