From the man page:
A convenient file in the library is null.tex, containing
nothing. When tex can't find a file it thinks you want to
input, it keeps asking you for another file name; respond-
ing `null' gets you out of the loop if you don't want to
input anything.
Unfortunately, this file doesn't exist in the library. It seems that it would
be nicer to type `null' and have LaTeX/TeX finish up gracefully rather than hit
^D and have it be forced to do an Emergency stop.
