I've just had to reboot pasteur.mit.edu for the third time in the past few
weeks, each time with the same symptoms.
BACKGROUND:
pasteur is configured as an "athena server", meaning it accepts rlogins. It
also doesn't seem to deactivate on its own, which is fine for this purpose.
PROBLEM:
it loses the /srvd and /urvd subdirectories from its packs on caduceus:,
although the other vax works fine on the same rvd packs. 'ls /srvd' looks ok,
but there is NOTHING (not even . and ..) in, for example, /srvd/bin, so most
stuff is unavailable. I had to realize that "login" is available since "su"
was gone in order to become root to shutdown.
System name: pasteur
Type and version: CVAXSTAR 7.1H (1 update(s) to same version)
Display type: SM
What were you trying to do?
Use emacs via rlogin
What's wrong:
See above: system disk packs were hosed.
What should have happened:
ls /srvd/bin should show a bunch of binaries
