rt 7.1H: protocol error from R4 xterm

What were you trying to do?
What's wrong:
(With the R4 xterm and the R4 server from the 7.1 packs.. if this bug
is forwared to the X Consortium, fill in the right info about any
patches we have applied.)
I pressed ctrl-middle button in an xterm but then released the button
before the window popped up (the xterm was swapped out so it took a
while). I then moved into the root window and popped up a twm menu.
I saw the xterm menu flash on and off the screen, and then xterm
exited with the following error:

I was able to repeat the failure in another xterm that was also
swapped out (so it took several seconds for the menu to appear).
What should have happened:
xterm should not have protocol errors.
