1) It is documented that NCS was used. At least in the design specs.
2) There is a way to build it properly even with the illegal '$'
If you look in ncs/cpp/*.h - there is a define that needs to be set
on the hardware that requires $ ellipsing. It used to be required for
hc1,4 as well.
