The PS/2 cluster in E52 is running a snapshot of the development that
has been going on at Athena, taken about 3 months ago. We are waiting
for a newer version of the AIX operating system from IBM before putting
newer software into the field. This is because there are sufficient
problems with AIX 1.1 that we feel AIX 1.2 is needed for to provide a
stable, reliable product.
The problems you reported are known. AIX 1.1 does not support "man"
(this is one of the major reasons to use 1.2). Olc was not built at
the time those machines were installed. Problems with X based login
should also be fixed in the next PS/2 software release. It has been
observed by some that X login is more likely to work if you are not
already in the /etc/passwd file; this would explain why only some
machines let you log in.
There is a mailing list "bug-ps2" to report PS/2 bugs; this goes directly
to those who work on PS/2 software so it is likely to get faster response.
