This is in regard to the question you sent to bugs.
1) The '-d' option is not supported at Athena, although lpr will pass the flag
on to the printserver. In theory we could enable it on a printer but as you
properly explained none are setup that way. You will notice that the option is
NOT documented in the lpr man page for that reason as well. Only supported
options are.
2) Another reason you did not mention was the load it put on the print server.
If running dvi2ps takes 2 minutes on a large thesis, that's two minutes the
printer is not able to print, especially if you are asking for '-r'
It's better to put the load in the distributed environment (i.e. the
workstations) than on a limited server.
By the way - why was this reported as a bug? (respond to me personally).
