It appears impossible to build tex without manual intervention if it is not
already installed. When I tried to build on the PS/2 for the first time, I
had to set $TEXINPUTS and $TEXFONTS to point at the directory in which tex
and font source is kept, and virtex still complained about fonts not found
when generating latex and slitex fmt files (I just typed return to get past
these).
