Was there a copy of words.lpt there before you scribed the file? Or
(more likely) How large would words.lpt have been if there were enough
diskspace? It is really unlikely there is a bug in ls, in fact this is
more likely NFS misbehaving (if it is even incorrect at all.)
If you can duplicate the situation, can you try using
/mit/watchmaker/vaxbin/stat on the file, and see what values it gives
for the size?
