if i try to rlogin, it asks for a password (why? i have tickets and
it has an rcmd srvtab), says it's incorrect (it isn't), then prompts
me for username, passwd, and repeats, telling me my login is
   incorrect.

This behavior is correct. Kerberos remote rlogin only works if the
account which you are trying to log into is already in the /etc/passwd
file; and things have been this way for at least two releases.

We are considering merging the Athena changes to /bin/login into the
kerberos login.krb so that it will be possible to user kerberos login
without being in the /etc/passwd file, but it is not clear that this
is desirable, and it is also not clear when/if it'll get done.
