I'd like to mention that other users have also asked us about the
possibility of using the VS3100 microfloppy at 720K in addition to the
currently-supported 1.44M mode.
This is important for the IBM PC/PS2 machines, since they don't
(to our knowledge) have any standard way of reading/writing VS3100
Unix formatted microfloppies. In addition, since the Macintosh (at
least the currently-available Mac II's) have standard utilities that
can read and write MSDOS microfloppies, this would facilitate file
interchange with those machines as well.
Is there anybody at Athena who is moderately expert at
understanding file interchange via microfloppies? If so, could they
share some of their wisdom with us?

Subject: vax 7.0F: dosdir

System name: hal-clement
Type and version: CVAXSTAR 7.0F
Display type: SM
What were you trying to do?
Display directory of 3 1/2" 720K IBM disk via command "dosdir"
What's wrong:
I got hard sync err (can't read FAT)
What should have happened:
Directory should be displayed. This is more a request for a feature.
3 1/2" 720K disks are a lot more standard than 1.44M disks, and it would
be nice to be able to read and write them from the VS3100. Is this
possible? I teach classes on Athena for the Lowell Institute School
and most of the students are from outside MIT. I think a lot of them
would find it handy to read and write in this format as would I.
Please describe any relevant documentation references:
man dosdir
