What should have happened:
Anything else. Programs should never dump core. The problem
was spaces instead of tabs in syslog.conf. Either should be
allowed.
Nope. Spaces can't be used as a separator because spaces are legal in
the selector field (i.e. the first field) of each configuration file
line.
You're right, though, that it shouldn't coredump.
