This happens with version 6.4R and 7.0E on a VAX. I haven't tested an RT.
If I kerberos rlogin to a machine on which I do not have access to my home
directory, my shell starts in $HOME anyway (in this case, ~/.. is mode 700
not owned by me, but I am able to rlogin and get to my local home
directory). rlogind must be doing the chdir as root.
If I try "rsh" in the same case, no matter what I do I get
getwd: can't open ..
(Did you su in a fascist directory?)
