You're right. Your homedir was not attached, according to attachtab,
but the symlink from /mit/saeed to /afs/athena/user/s/saeed was still
there from a previous login. So, login warned you that you were being
logged in with *a* homedir, but presumably not your real homedir
(since the attach failed). If that were a stray local homedir (or a
fake one that someone tried to trap you with) you would want to know
about it, as Ron mentioned.
Attach deals with this problem correctly, but apparently login
doesn't. (The /bin/login attach is a little different than
"/bin/athena/attach <username>" in a few subtle ways.) I think
/bin/login needs to be modified before we give "normal" users AFS
homedirs.
