I can think of one cause of your failure. If you are running an R4
server as you indicate, and try using certain applications that relied
on a bug in the R3 server (such as an R3 xterm), it is possible to have
the failure that you so indicated. I suggest you
a) Either read the file /mit/epeisach/X describing the difference,
b) run the R4 xterm when using an R4 server
or
c) Use the command "xset bc" to enable "backward-compatibility" while
running the R4 server.
If the problem you are describing is not related to the above, I would
be very interested in hearing about it.
