occasionally, emacs will put odd characters on the screen when
starting up, usually a line of vertical bars ("pipes") which would
indicate a vertically split window, even though i haven't typed
anything yet. also occasionally, it puts the mode line on the 23rd
line down, and leaves thirty-odd inaccessible lines between there and
the minibuffer. sometimes these disappear when i type my first
character (even just hitting control will sometimes make it go away),
but on a few occasions the misplaced mode line has not gone away, and
i've had to restart. i'm using emacs version 18.54.29, according to
m-x emacs-version.
