I have noticed occasionally that emacs makes one or more buffers "read-only"
for no apparent reason. This seems like a bug unless there is some circumstance
in which it is supposed to do this which I am inadvertantly triggering.
It is hard to say when this happens. It may be linked to the presence of other
read-only buffers. For example, I was looking at some (read-only) emacs
source code, and the emacs-lisp buffer I was editing repeatedly became
read-only. Another time a couple of C code buffers became read-only when
I split the window horizontally; in this case, one buffer (not displayed)
was laready read-only. I don't recall it happening when there was no
existing read-only buffer.
