i was trying to do some work, and received pesty and harassing
messages from a user
What's wrong:
my name appears in the stock answer for net-directory
What should have happened:
the stock answer should refer to /mit/net-directory/README

/mit/net-directory/README contains
This directory contains items of use to those who want to know more
about how to use the Internet, and the networks connected to it.
Among the documents contained here are:
-) the network directory produced at the University of Texas, which lives
in /mit/net-directory/net-dir and contains four parts:
net.directory.part[1234].
-) regularly-produced network periodicals which describe changes in
network usage and topology, new services, etc. are kept in
/mit/net-directory/magazines.
-) information about domain names is kept in
/mit/net-directory/domain-info
-) a report prepared by the Rand Corporation which describes some
issues concerning the Ethics and Etiquette of Electronic Mail, which
is contained in /mit/net-directory/documents/email.ethics. It has
Fortran-style carriage control, which means you should use the
lpr -f /mit/net-directory/documents/email.ethics
command to print it off.
-) a standard hosttable for the Internet is kept in
/mit/net-directory/host-tables/hosts.txt; this is updated once every
two weeks or so. note that this table will go out-of-vogue soon, and
that most hosts will only be known via the domain name system.
-) a standard hosttable-type file for BITNET is kept in
/mit/net-directory/host-tables/bitnet.links; this is updated whenever
the BITNIC distributes a new version of bitnet.links.
There is also a directory called "bin" for programs to help you use
these documents, and a directory "etc" which contains data files used
by the programs in "bin".
These documents aren't provided by Project Athena, so you should report
problems with these files to <henry@garp.mit.edu>. I will only respond
to e-mail requests; talk, write, and zephyr requests are likely to be
ignored, if not actively flamed.
