zephyr mail notification misfiring

I received two zephyr notifications of new mail today (from
ATHENA-PO-2.MIT.EDU) when in fact no mail had arrived.

A probably completely unrelated coincidence is that another user
(jtidwell) received two pieces of mail WITHOUT notification at almost
exactly the same time.
