I used to (a moment ago) have a directory ~/tex with a few useful files in it.
Then I cd'd elsewhere, did
	cp 6821.tar ~/tex
and got a 'Permission denied' error on '~/tex'. When I looked to see what
was wrong, I found that my ~/tex directory has been obliterated; it doesn't
even have . or .. entries in it anymore. My homedir is on talos:/u1, but
that shouldn't be the problem, since it seems to have about 3M to spare at
the moment, and the file I was copying was only 100K or so.

I've left the directory as is (not world-readable) to preserve useful
information; anyone with root on talos is welcome to peer into it.

Please tell me what is wrong, and whether someone can get my tex directory off
backups for me...
