The -r option (for producing relocatable code ok for linking against
other object files -- sometimes used in building libraries) suppresses
the symbol-undefined message, and leaves an executable output file,
even if this file isn't going to executable because of missing
linkage. It probably shouldn't do this unless there are no undefined
symbols.
