Athena was correct in not liking that message. The originating host was
actually, through.cs.caltech.edu. Since it was routed through
amongst.cs.caltech.edu, I was able to guess that it was probably in the
cs.caltech.edu domain (and that user does exist on
through.cs.caltech.edu). Apparently, neither "through" nor "amongst"
remembered to tack on the local domain before passing it on.
ATHENA.MIT.EDU cannot really guess what domain unqualified hosts are in,
so if it is unqualified, it attempts to tack on the local domain, which
is about the only thing it can do.
A message has been sent to postmaster@amongst.cs.caltech.edu mentioning
that they forgot to tack on the domain name.
