i think that since purge is not supposed to take
any arguments, the presence of arguments should
generate an error. it is entirely possible for the
novice to type ``purge ~/foo'', but mean ``expunge
~/foo'', wait a long time, and get a result
nonconformant to expectations.
not to mention graybeards who should know better...
