What were you trying to do?
activate my machine and log in
What's wrong:
When I came in this morning to activate my machine to log in, I hit some
random keys like usual. Among the keys I hit was ^T (the load was spit
out), and I suspect also ^S.
The activation messages (activating workstation..., attach messages,
etc) didn't appear on the display, but the X server & xlogin did start
up. When I used ^P to stop xlogin, the X server went away but the
toehold banner didn't reappear.
When I then struck ^Q, some stuff quickly printed (I suspect the
activation messages), and then the toehold banner appeared.
What should have happened:
The toehold stuff should probably disable flow control on the
console until login &co are called, so this sort of thing doesn't
happen. Alternatively, the device driver might want to always turn
output back on when the graphics device is closed.
I can easily envision users learning this trick to leave a workstation
apparently "dead" so they can come along, press ^Q, and get a free
workstation.
