this is evidence of a vm/fragmentation problem:
couldn't start latex even when i pared down to a single
xterm. so i rebooted and now, without paring down (and
with more memory in use accordingly), i *can* start latex.
before rebooting:
% pstat -s
9774k used (4718k text), 6177k free, 1680k wasted, 512k missing
avail: 4*512k 5*256k 9*128k 15*64k 9*32k 10*16k 289*1k
% /mit/sipb/rtbin/latex
/mit/sipb/rtbin/latex: Not enough memory
after rebooting:
% pstat -s
10044k used (2824k text), 5907k free, 2384k wasted, 512k missing
avail: 9*512k 2*256k 1*128k 4*64k 3*32k 6*16k 211*1k
% latex
