(All the following was done at the unix level, using "olcr xxx" commands.)
I was connected to user jjj. (instance 0)
I grabbed user bowler (instance 1)
(NB - 'on' is my alias for /afs/contrib/consult/vaxbin/olcr)

User grabbed.
You are now kevles (1).
I sent a message. It got sent to user jjj (instance 0).
I forwarded to the pickup queue. User jjj got forwarded. The final message
from olcr was:
(~) Meow? on f -s pickup
Question forwarded. You are signed off OLC.
kevles (0) has been deactivated. You are now kevles (1), again!
I think the problem may have been just that the message (you are now kevles(1))
was misleading at the unix prompt? Even though I stayed in the same window
and did nothing else in-between, I guess that olcr always starts you at
instance 0?
