emacs goes into garbage collection loop

I used emacs discuss mode for the first time today. At one point I
typed 'p' (previous transaction) and got the standard "garbage
collecting..." message. Then I got the "done" message but it was
flashing on and off. Emacs seemed to be garbage collecting over and
over again. It stopped eventually. When it stopped, the size of the
emacs process was 3.5 Meg.
I was running on elric, a public 6.3B pvax.
