(RTPC) Version 6.3B: AFS (?) + logging in

System type, version:	(RTPC) Version 6.3B
System name: pit-manager
What's wrong:

Occasionally when I log in, the /usr/athena/lib/init/xsession file
will fail to find my .startup.X file. For example, here's what
happened when I logged in during this login session:

Setting up environment...
Starting /mit/jik/scripts/sh_mwm window manager...
Session initialization completed.

Notice the missing "Running custom startup activities listed in
~/.Startup.X...". When I start up an xterm from an mwm menu and
source my .startup.X, it works fine.

This could be another variant of what's been happening to people in
the field. I have no idea what's causing it, but suspect it's AFS
related, because AFS is the only thing that could tell the shell that
a file doesn't exist when it really does, when the file is on AFS (or
at least I think that's how it is :-).

What should have happened:

It should find the file correctly the first time.

  Software shouldn't have any bugs :-) :-) :-).

  jik
