We've been noticing some users reporting that they are "involuntarily
being logged out".
What happens is that the screen freezes momentarily, and then goes
black and the "Hit any key to start" message appears. It is happening
on different machines, in different buildings. No black bar messages
are appearing. The users are not trying to run anything unusual --
just xterm, emacs, maybe xscreensaver.
One of the consultants, Saeed Jaffer (saeed), encounters this problem
every time he tries to login. He'll be sending a detailed report of
exactly what happens, and is willing to demonstrate it to anyone who
is interested.

"involuntarily logged out" is kinda vague. Could you be more
specific?

Sounds like your X server is dying. Are you running any unusual X
programs?

How "bang!" do you get logged out? does this console window pop up, or
does the screen just go blank really suddenly?

usually something freezes up first, like a mouse or something, then the screen
goes black blank.
all i'm doing are emacs, 2 telnets, ftp, and sipb's xscreensaver.

Hi!
It doesn't sound like you're doing anything that should cause your
X server to die.
Has it happened on different machines, or always on the same machine?

Now I log under system to get onto athena and then starup all my stuff.
I'll send this user mail if and when i get my prblem fixed. But don't done

Li Shu . . .
Before your workstation returned you to "Hit any key to start"
did it display a "black-bar" message in the upper lefthand corner?
If so, did the message in the black bar mention "Panic?"
