We should perhaps consider adding /usr/local to the standard path,
maybe ahead of /srvd/patch, almost certainly towards the front of the
path.
I would disagree... this makes it very easy to be hacked on a public
workstation, more so than before. People may install something locally
as a replacement copy of a program that has other features. However,
when other people try using the machine, they will discover that their
commands don't work correctly.
Even if we say that we clean /usr/local on public workstations, this is
still a problem on private workstations. I would rather have the user
add /usr/local to his path only if he is sure that is what he wants. I
distrust it enough that I use /odie/site/usr/local to my path as opposed
to /usr/local.
By the way, these problems stem from my personal past experience...
