As a side note (possibly related), this was the problem that we were
experiencing with the last attempt to get xswitch and X10 to work on the
Athena VAXen. The method that the problem was solved was to "poll" all
the ttys after a few seconds. This seemed to then wakeup the xterm
(which was running, but never was mapped). The cause of this problem is
as yet unknown, but I deemed it not worthwile to pursue this given the
expense that was run up in trying to get X10 to continue to work with
the xlogin environment.
It would be interesting if this ever happens on a machine that has
remote access turned on. If this ever does happen, I would suggest the
following test:
login remotely
if the xterm appears now, stop... it is the same problem as
above.
if the xterm has not yet appeared, do:
do a "ps aux"
if there is an xterm running (but not mapped on the screen), do:
attach x10
/mit/x10/vaxlib/scanttys
if the xterm then appears, it is probably the same problem as
what we were experiencing with xswitch/X10.
However, I don't think there is anything that can be done until we can
reliably reproduce the problem. At least with X10, it was fairly
reliable.

Subject: No initial xterm started
I've noticed on occasion that a user logs in with the standard session
files and everything starts up, but the initial xterm. The user gets
the message "Creating initial xterm window..." but the window never
appears. I've seen this three times. Twice on a VS2000 and once on a
PVAX. On the PVAX I had the user try it again and they got the same
result three times in a row on the same machine; when they moved to a
different machine everything worked fine.
