second the commentary:
seems to me be rather nasty to throw away the entire
marked-and-ready-for-commit work history on this,
especially as the afs tokens EXPIRED DURING THE COMMIT
OPERATION, leaving a real mess. couldn't we do something
on a par with !DOS! (Abort, Retry, or Ignore?)
