f77 does not check return codes

While compiling a fortran program, I went over my hard limit (linking in
X libs of course). 

1) f77 did not check the return code for the write error and proceeded
to create an a.out that was world executable, but then hung when
atempted to execute

2) There was no indication from my fileserver that I had hit my hard
limit (zeus). I belive that was supposed to have been fixed in the new
kernal release.
