trouble with Emacs

Two problems:
1) I use mh-rmail to read my mail. The way to send a letter after
composing it is to type C-c C-c. Sometimes (but not always) when I do
that, it also kills the emacs window.
2) Sometimes when I start up emacs, I get a very large minibuffer (echo
area). It will not respond to commands to make it smaller, like:
Cu -8 C-x ^

I start emacs with the following:
emacs -font 6x10 -i -w =80x72-005+035 /mit/dryfoo/misc_notes&
The emacs-related lines in my ~/.Xresources file aren't really relevant;
they're mostly mods for when I work on a color workstation:
