i believe i've already answered this one once before, but here goes
again: there is no documented way to turn this behavior off. i will
forward your report to the X Consortium, and they will get back to us
with a fix rsn (we hope).
in the meantime, you might want to explore using mh-rmail (mh-e),
which is an emacs mode which lets you read your mail MH-style.
"M-x mh-rmail" will get you started.
