When there is no home directory (could not attach it for some
reason), there is no window manager running in the default xterm
window. Windows cannot be moved at all.
Also, backspace does not work in the default window. Typing
"tset" seemed to rectify the problem. Unfortunately, new users would
not know that "tset" exists.
Unfortunately, I either don't know, or can't remember all the
proper terminology to diagnose the problem. This is the best I could
do to describe what was going on.
