I've seen this error twice now. While logging in, I get the following
in the console window:
xlogin: I/O error
xlogin: Couldn't open pty, looking for a good pty/tty
There is nothing else in syslog to explain the reason why this happened.
Are the tty permissions getting cleaned up correctly?
