Andrew console overrides xdm console.

How does the console program, spawned by xdm know it is receiving log
messages?
Today I ran the Andrew console program.
Thereafter all system status messages appeared in my andrew console
window but not in my xdm console.
After I killed the andrew console program, no new system messages made
it to the xdm console.
There is a bad interaction here, which I would like to understand and
correct.
