6.3B vax emacs not handling selections

When I select text in an xterm, xdsc , or other emacs window, and click
the middle mouse button in this emacs window, the last text I cut in
this emacs window is displayed, not the current selection.
I cannot get this to reliably repeat in another emacs window, but it has
happened before in previous login session on sporadic occasions. I have
no idea how to get the selection behavior back once it starts acting
strange, other than bringing up a new emacs. I tried to M-x
x-set-x11-mouse-bindings (thinking that would reset something), but it
didn't fix the problem.
I'm sorry I don't have any more information at this time, however I will
keep this emacs iconified for the remainder of this login session (until
about 4:30 minimum, barring crashes and power outages), if you would like
to come and take a look.
