emacs apropos command

I was using the 5.5t release and I attemped to use the M-x apropos
command. I hit return without typing anything. After a long time I
received a "garbage collecting ...done" message and then a little later
I was dropped out of the program losing some text. It appears that if
you apropos nothing that this creats a huge search space that overloads
something.
