VAX 6.3B: Console window problems

Every time I activate, I get messages like this in my console window
(which, incidentally, then pops up partially on top of the xlogin
window):

Aug 11 10:06:40 kaz xlogin: I/O error
Aug 11 10:06:40 kaz xlogin: Couldn't open pty, looking for a good pty/tty
