I just tried to log out by clicking on the logout button,
which put up the confirmation dialog box, and then clicking
on "yes, log me out;" but, while the dialog box disappeared
and the login button never reappeared, I was not logged out.

Seems possible I have stopped jobs -- which should be reported
to me in either a dialog window or the console window* -- but
if I do, I can't find them: none of my remaining xterms list
any stopped jobs.

* The contents of my console window were lost in the power
/network problems earlier today, and never repainted; nor
can I get it to repaint: there are two also-erased Zephyrgrams
sitting on top and they and the console window appear glued
together; so that, if CTRL-l works in the console window
I can't tell because the windowgrams are obscuring the display
  space.

The bottom line is: I hit a state where the logout button said
it would log me out, but it didn't; and it [the logout button]
disappeared forever.
